Details AN EXCEPTIONAL AND RARE SCENT BOTTLE BY SAMPSON MORDAN. MADE IN LONDON AND FULLY HALLMARKED FOR 1882. Decorated in KATE GREENAWAY style with the figures of two young girls in victorian dress sitting on a wall watching a snail. in the foreground a milestone and in the background a church tower with spire and clock.
Kate Greenaway designs seem to appear on Mordan scent bottles dating between 1881 and 1884. Kate Greenaway (1846 - 1901) was an illustarator of childrens books in the Victorian period and her illustrations typically picture children with animals and birds in the English countryside sometimes on Mordan pieces with a church in the background. This is a rare opportunity to aquire a piece in excellent conditon. It is likely this piece was originally parcel gilt as traces of the original gilding survive around the hinge.
